Breaking Down Your Goals
So, a quick review. You should be in a place where you have figured out what you want all the aspects of your life to look like. So that is your long term goal and your biggest motivator. Now you need to start planning out how to get the results you want.
The inspiration for how I am planning to stay focused is all coming from The 12 Week Year. So moving forward, anything I provide will be utilizing that mind set and setup. I will give general information and ideas from the book throughout the time I am working on everything myself, but if you want the full impact pickup a copy from my link. Hopefully it will only inspire you more!
Moving on to breaking down your goals. Figuring out how to go from where you are now, to your dream life can seem very daunting. So you need to break it down into a lot of smaller, attainable steps.
The 12 Week Year
The premise of The 12 Week Year is to look at every 12 weeks the way you usually would a year. And by doing this, you keep the urgency to complete your tasks alive.
The easiest way to think about this is the concept of a new year resolution. Say that you resolve to lose 30lbs this year. So January 1st you are all excited. You are going to sign up for a gym, start a new diet, and drink a smoothie for breakfast everyday. March 15th and you have been to the gym once, and are having McDonald’s coffee for breakfast. But you still have 8.5 months. June 30th and you realize that you are doing a good job at making smoothies the last few weeks, but still aren’t going to the gym more than once a month. Now it’s Thanksgiving and you have given up because you’ve only lost 3lbs all year. Maybe you’ll try again next year.
I’m sure you can relate to this situation in a lot of different aspects of your work. When we start the year with falling a little behind, it’s fine because there is still time to fix it later. But as time runs out, we have less faith we can catch up because the deficit only gets bigger. In some goals, the last 12 weeks of the year are the most productive. Because you don’t have a choice but meet your sales goal at work. When it comes down to crunch time and it’s either make the goal or lose your job, you’ll magically become amazing at what you need to do.
By breaking the year down into 12 week spans of time, you keep the urgency alive.
If you want more information on that idea, please grab a copy of the book!
Making Your First 12 Week Plan
So whatever you need to change about your life in order to achieve the results you want are going to inspire your 12 week goals. I know a lot of what you want probably requires money. So I’ll use that as my example moving forward. But remember to apply this to whatever your goal is.
If you want to start making more money you either need to work towards a promotion at work, finding a new (or second) job, or begin doing some side hustling. Choose whichever of these options that work for you and create some ideas as to what you need to do in order to achieve that goal.
Say you choose to work towards a promotion at work. Talk to your supervisor and see what you need to work on to be eligible to be promoted. Then after getting that list (which can be a first step!) pick out some things you need to do to achieve each of the items on the list.
I know how abstract the example I just described sounds. You may have everything you need from that, or you may need more specific examples to have a clue as to what I am talking about.
But that’s why we are taking this journey together! I am going to show you my first 12 week plan. And I’m going to give you the EXACT printable I used to lay out my weekly plan. For free!
I want to get the results I need so that I can live my dream life as soon as possible. And I want you to have your dream life too. So throughout this whole process I am going to give as much help as I possibly can. And I want you to tell me if you need anything that I have not thought of. If it will help, I can can see your vision, I will try to make it for you.
Because what is the point of only 1 person benefiting from it? We should all get to live our dream life!
Start the Work to See Results
I have made my first 12 week plan and written up my first weekly plan using the weekly planner sheet that I created. Feel free to print yours out so that you can be prepared as well.
You may be having the same issue as me. Which is that I have SO many ideas on goals that I need to achieve to really start getting the results that I want. But I also know that if I give myself too many things and end up not accomplishing enough of them throughout my first 12 week year, I will be incredibly discouraged.
I want to be able to check successes and completed items off my list. So I really went with the idea of staying honest and doing all of my tasks to the best of my ability. I went with keeping everything achievable and realistic this time to see how it goes. I do however have a few ideas of what I can work on next if I get ahead of schedule.
But with my 2nd baby being due before the 12 weeks is up may adjust things too! Honestly, one of my goals is trying to be a little ahead of schedule if at all possible. Because I want to lose as little progress as possible when the baby arrives. After all, it’s all about results. And it’s for my kids too.
Make sure that you keep your expectations realistic for yourself too. You don’t want to be crazy and burn yourself out. It will ruin the whole process for you. And don’t forget, you’re going to do this 12 week plan followed by a week or so off as a reward. Then get right back at it with your next 12 week year. So being burned out is not an option!
