I’ve been asked numerous times “how do you like being a mom?”. It’s one of those questions that is strangely difficult to answer, My answer has almost exclusively been “it’s good, I like it.” with a small smile and nod to encourage what I am saying. But what is the real answer? What is it like to become a mom? How DO I like being a mom?
The Hard Part
Being a mom will put you totally out of your comfort zone every. single. day. You are tired in a way you didn’t know was possible. Everything you do is new because you have to do it while holding a baby. You have to make every decision there is for this helpless little person. Being in control of and responsible for a life is completely insane to comprehend. The kind of person that your child grows up to be is completely up to you and your husband. There are all these decisions to make, that you’ve never thought about before and you know nothing about. But you do it. You figure it out. Being a mom is hard.
Make the hard part a little easier by keeping baby happy and freeing up your hands. I absolutely love my baby carrier! I use the Ergobaby Original and it is easy to use. To use it with your newborn you also want the Ergobaby Easy Snug Infant Insert.
The Gross Part
Being a mom, you are going to get really dirty. You get poop on you from changing diapers. Being peed on in public is not uncommon. Sometimes, you will be wiping drool and boogers off baby’s face every hour. And don’t forget leaking breast milk! Not to mention showering becomes incredibly difficult. If you have a situation like me and are alone for days at a time, good luck showering. So you got poop and pee on you and you are struggling to fit in a shower. And if you are one of those lucky mom’s you even had time to work out and get sweaty. Do you feel gross yet? Being a mom is gross.
Feel a little less gross by using Lansinoh Stay Dry Nursing Pads while you are breastfeeding. I lived in these the entire time I was breastfeeding my first and it made such a difference!
The Wonderful Part
Being a mom makes you special. There is this little person that loves you more than anything else in the world. Baby’s smile makes your world brighten. Your baby is the sweetest baby in the world. He plays, laughs, and snuggles you constantly. He tries to eat your face and grabs your nose with his hands. All because he loves you. Nothing else in your life will ever make you as happy as your baby. You look at baby and know that you did that. You made him. And you will raise him too. Being a mom is wonderful.
Document everything using a Baby Memory Book so that even when memories fade, you’ll still be able to look back.
How Do I like Being a Mom?
I was just not sure what to expect when I was about to become a mother. Would I be in pain from delivery? Would I bond with my baby? What if I had post partum depression? And what if my baby was sick? It is hard, gross, wonderful, terrifying, rewarding, and brutal. And 1000 other things that are too difficult to put into words. It makes me everything I have ever wanted to be. Being a mom is perfection.
