Do you have BIG dreams for your year but you aren’t sure how you are going to make them a reality? Because your focus is all over the place and the list just keeps getting longer… and longer. I GET IT. And I know what you need. You need to choose ONE word of the year.
I am going into my third year with the same financial goals for my family because we have not been in a place where we’ve been able to make any progress. In fact, we’ve even been worse off than ever before due to unforeseeable circumstances. But that is OKAY. Because this past year, if I had done what I did 3 years ago with our money, we would’ve had none left by the end of September. Not even zero balance, but actually in the red.
We have learned SO MUCH over the last few years about money and are not making the same mistakes again. And if we made it through this year, we can continue to make it through anything. It just makes me WANT IT that much more.
I want to share with you how to choose your ONE word of the year to help you focus on your goals and make them a reality.

Choose your ONE Word of the Year
Why you need ONE word of the year
Once you write down your BIG goals for this year, sit back and take a hard look at them. How are you going to achieve them? What struggles have you had in the past with ending the year where you want to be? What has gotten in your way?
Are you distracted? Lacking time? Giving up too easily?
You need to be honest with yourself here. No excuses. No blame or shame. JUST answers. Pinpoint what those are and you will have an idea of what you need to do to avoid them. This will help point you to your word of the year.
The whole point of choosing one word of the year is to help keep you on track. So that every time you see that word or use that word, your mind goes back to what you are working towards. And you remember your motivation. It should light a fire in your soul because you want it so much.
And your word of the year will help you focus on getting there.
What kind of word should you choose?
This will depend on what your goals are. But some criteria that can be helpful include:
- something you say often
- a word that sparks your interest
- has an extended definition that speaks to you
- something simple and easy to remember
Your one word of the year does not have to meet all of those things. But keeping each of them in mind may help to keep you on track when you are choosing it.
Word of the Year: Determination
This is my word of the year. I have heard of this concept before but the last several years of my life have been so scattered that I had no idea what they would bring. So I allowed myself to use that as an excuse for my life being scattered and to live in a “put on fires as they spark” type attitude.
That is NOT working for me. It never really has. Here’s the thing.. I am a planner. I plan EVERYTHING. And I have made SO MANY plans the past few years that just never came close to panning out because I allowed them not to.
So this year is going to be different because I have decided that it will be. Which is why the word determination is my word of the year.
Why determination speaks to me
I looked at hundreds of words and had no idea what to choose. It took me weeks of avoiding making a decision to realize that I was letting myself avoid the task because it was hard.
So I chose to start now and just sit down one day and do it. I narrowed my list down to about 20 words and phrases. Then I got down to 3. And I looked up the definitions of each so I could really be on the right track.
Determination – The act of deciding on a desired outcome and taking action to achieve it. Being resolute in purpose and persevering until you achieve your desired outcome.
Just in case you were wondering, the other 2 words I was considering at this point were courage and perseverance. But determination encompasses those values for me. I will admit, I have 3 words written in my planner. But they are all a part of my determination and goals.
Determination. Resilience. Commitment.
What is your word of the year?
Thinking about my word makes me emotional. I want to reach my goals so badly that seeing others who have similar goals achieve them hurts my heart with pride for them because I KNOW the work that they are doing. And I KNOW it pays off.
I never understood what people meant when they said it was so close they could taste it. But now I do. I can TASTE my dreams. I can reach out and ALMOST touch them. This will be my year. I want to look back at this day in a year and know how far my determination got me and then never let it die out.
And I want you to reach your dreams too. Achieve your goals. Use your one word of the year to get yourself there!
You make your life what it is. Sometimes things get in the way. That is just life. But the choice to get up and keep going even if you have twice as far to go as when you first started…. that choice is YOURS. Make that choice.
